Spring Shred: Why March to May Is the Best Time to Snowboard

As winter gives way to spring and the days grow longer, a lot of riders start packing it in - too soon. But for those who know, March through May is when snowboarding hits a whole new level. From sun-soaked park laps to stable backcountry missions, spring riding delivers a special kind of magic. If you’re not milking the late season, you’re seriously missing out.

Here’s why spring is snowboarding’s best-kept secret - and why it’s time to extend your winter mindset.

1. More Sun, More Stoke

Spring riding = good vibes. Warmer temps, longer days, and a mellow mountain mood mean more time to shred without freezing your toes off. The layers get lighter, the playlists get louder, and après starts earlier (sometimes even mid-lap). You can ride longer, hang out in the parking lot without gloves, and enjoy that unbeatable bluebird energy.

2. Corn Snow = Playtime

Let’s talk about corn - not the kind you eat, the kind you ride. Spring corn snow is smooth, fast, and insanely fun. It’s that dreamy top layer that softens with the sun and stays carvable without turning to mush (if you time it right). Morning sessions can feel like surfing frozen waves. It’s also the most forgiving snow of the year, making it prime time to dial in tricks, push progression, or just have fun getting loose.

3. Backcountry Bonus: More Coverage, Safer Lines

Here’s something a lot of riders overlook: by March, the snowpack in the backcountry is often deeper and more stable than it is early in the season. That means less risk of hitting hidden rocks, wrecking your board, or dealing with weird coverage. It's also when many steeper lines become safer to ride - firmer, transformed snow can mean lower avalanche risk on certain aspects.

But - and this is key - backcountry knowledge and avalanche safety are always essential. Stable doesn’t mean risk-free. Bring your gear, know your stuff, and ride with people who know theirs too.

4. Park Season is in Full Bloom

Spring is when the park scene comes alive. With softer landings and forgiving conditions, it’s the perfect time to send it. Resorts usually keep their park crews busy sculpting fun, creative lines for spring jams and end-of-season events. Whether you’re throwing tricks or just cruising and boosting side hits, there’s no better time to enjoy the freestyle side of snowboarding.

5. Fewer Crowds, Bigger Smiles

Let’s be honest - riding in March or April is like having a secret season. Most people have mentally moved on to hiking or biking, which means empty lift lines, uncrowded trails, and mellow vibes everywhere. You can lap your favorite runs all day without weaving through weekend warriors. Plus, resorts tend to chill out too, with more relaxed terrain policies and laid-back end-of-season events.

6. Lift Tickets Go on Sale (Finally)

Another bonus: spring riding is cheaper. Many resorts drop ticket prices once the high season ends, and you’ll often find spring passes, multi-day deals, or bonus perks like included lunch or gear discounts. More riding, less spending? Yes, please.

7. Don’t Let the Calendar Decide When It’s Over

Too many snowboarders fall into the trap of thinking winter ends in February. But snowboarding is a mindset, not a date on the calendar. March to May offers some of the best and most versatile riding of the entire year - whether you're on slushy groomers, smooth backcountry lines, or spring park laps.

At Amplid, we build our gear to handle it all - frozen mornings, sun-softened slush, deep spring missions, and high-speed carving. We’re not just about winter. We’re about the full season, start to finish. So keep your board waxed. Keep your boots laced. Keep your winter mindset alive.

Spring is still snowboarding season. And we’ll see you out there.
